Since its inception in 1922, this iconic cross-country ski race between S\u00e4len and Mora has grown to become one of the world\u2019s most beloved sporting events, with over 1.8 million participants having crossed the finish line beneath the classic finish arch. We spoke to the Vasaloppet\u2019s CEO, Johan Eriksson, about what makes the event so unique.  <\/p>\n\n<p>\u2013 The Vasaloppet is a combination of tradition, challenge and a sense of community. Whether you\u2019re a beginner or an elite skier, it\u2019s an experience like no other. Many people use their registration and participation as a training goal, which makes the Vasaloppet an important driving force for health and wellbeing. But its significance goes far beyond the physical \u2013 the race also fosters a sense of pride and belonging, not only amongst the participants but also throughout the entire region, says Johan Eriksson.   <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Race development and variation<\/strong><br\/>Despite its history and successes, the Vasaloppet continues to evolve. Johan explains that it is a constant challenge to strike a balance between preserving the classic feel and innovating to remain relevant.<br\/>In addition to the main race itself, the Vasaloppet has significantly expanded its range of events over the years. Today, no fewer than 26 races are on offer during the winter and summer weeks. Participants can choose to ski, cycle or run. Furthermore, new formats such as night races, team races and skate skiing have made it easier for more people to take part \u2013 whatever their level of ambition.    <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe wide variety means there\u2019s something for everyone. We want both experienced and novice participants to feel that they can find a race that suits their needs and goals,\u201d says Johan. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>A driving force for local growth<\/strong><br\/>As well as being a test of strength for the participants, the Vasaloppet is also a key driving force for local development and growth in the region and the three smaller municipalities of S\u00e4len, \u00c4lvdalen and Mora. Johan points out that they often say the event generates as much for the region as a World Ski Championships or a Eurovision Song Contest final \u2013 but with the difference that it takes place every year. <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIt has a huge impact on the local economy. Small businesses, hotels and shops all benefit directly or indirectly from the Vasaloppet. And with 4,000 volunteers, we also create a sense of community and involvement that extends far beyond the ski trails,\u201d says Johan.  <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Focus on sustainability<\/strong><em><br\/><\/em>Sustainability is another issue close to the Vasaloppet\u2019s heart, and Johan is proud of their work on the UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular focus on social sustainability \u2013 ensuring that more people take part in and engage with the Vasaloppet\u2019s activities. This includes lowering barriers and opening doors to give more people the opportunity to take part in physical activity and enjoy access to nature and culture. <br\/>\u2013 We inspire people to prepare for races and to stay physically active. We are constantly working to develop our offering to meet participants\u2019 changing needs, so that every race can attract large numbers of people, he says. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>A worthy candidate<\/strong><br\/>With the motto <em>\u2018In the footsteps of our forefathers, towards future victories\u2019<\/em>, the Vasaloppet has inspired \u2013 and continues to inspire \u2013 generations of skiers and Swedish sporting culture.
